5 Ways I Beat Stress (And You Can Too)

I find myself struggling with stress on a daily basis. Some days it knocks me down with headaches or anxiety, other days I beat it down using some of the following techniques.

Stretch It Out!

Following along with a Yoga With Adriene or Blogilates video is a favorite of mine. It’s always easy to search for a video targeting where I’m feeling tension, and completing a session always makes me feel more relaxed. Some of Adriene’s videos are under 10 minutes, so it can be easy to sneak in a quick yoga session.

Drink Tea

Chamomile, Lavender, Valerian, and Peppermint can all help to reduce stress. Celestial Seasonings is one of my favorite tea brands, I especially love their Tension Tamer and Sleepytime Lemon Jasmine Teas. I recently discovered they have a Lemon Lavender Lane tea that I will also be trying soon.

Get Out Into Nature/Go For A Walk

Walking in nature can bring a sense of calm and peace. Being in a flower garden, forest, or near water is calming and rejuvenating. Walking itself can be calming, by focusing on the rhythm of your steps and breathing you can help give your mind a much-needed break from whatever is causing stress. Even 5 or 10 minutes can be enough to feel refreshed.

Write It Down

Sometimes I can’t put a finger on what’s bothering me, or I’m feeling overwhelmed by too many things all at once. In those situations, I like to write in a “brain dump” journal. The beauty of this kind of journal is that it doesn’t have to be perfect or consistent. You simply write down what’s on your mind: emotions, lists, drawings, nothing is out of scope. Once everything is dumped out, I usually realize how to actually work through whatever is bothering me.

Smile And Laugh

Laughter turns off the stress response, and smiling can trick your brain into thinking that things aren’t so bad. When I was going through a really rough patch at an old job, I would watch Good Mythical Morning every night because it made me laugh and helped me reset from a stressful/emotional day at work. Some ideas for a good laugh: funny animal videos, comedians, comedy movies/TV, just acting silly.
